Why is this a Blog?

So, I was thinking about that book I always semi-joked about writing called "Everybody Hates Mike Jones". Well, I then realized that nobody would buy it if I ever wrote it, so I decided to turn it into a blog so I wouldn't have to put in the effort of making a book to have nobody read it anyway. Enjoy!

Pragmatism Applied

Today during thanksgiving, I witnessed something that made me feel like my major wasn't entirely useless. But first, some context...

Around the beginning of the twentieth century, there was a psychologist named William James. While he was one of the founding fathers of modern psychology, he also did some philosophy on the side. James, as a pragmatist, was more concerned with ideas that affected actual human experience as opposed to Descartes who primarily focused the question of existence. Basically, if some philosophical concept wouldn't change the way you lived your life, it wasn't important for James.

One concept James focused on in his writings is the idea of truth; not Truth, but truth. For James, there was no capital-T Truth; he defined truth as how we experience something and as something always in flux. For example, if I saw a tree that I thought was blue and my friend saw the same tree and thought it was red, we would have different truths about the tree, even though we experienced the same tree. But our truths could change very easily if me and my friend switched locations and saw the tree in a novel, changing our truth about the tree.

So, how does this relate to some vague story I have about thanksgiving? At one point during the meal, we began talking about that old proverb about a tree falling in the woods (does it make a sound?) So, I responded to this saying that God heard it (we just discussed this particular question in Modern Philosophy, and that was the answer. Weird right?). My mother asked if it was a taxable event. My sister asked if it developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. My aunt asked if it affected gender stratification. And my brother, being the business major that he will be some day, asked how can make big bucks cause that tree fell down. It was fascinating to see so many different ways to examine the same event. Everyone in my family has different ideas of truth, reality, and experience that manifested themselves through a hypothetical tree. It's pretty amazing that we can still be an awesome family will all these different truths at work in our lives.

Happy Thanksgiving Everybody :D

My new Lost

As many of you know, I am obsessed with Lost. It's a show that I just freaking love, but ever since it ended, I have been looking for a replacement.

And I found it.

While I am starting to feel a mild over-saturization of zombies in culture (a story for another day), AMC's The Walking Dead manages to use zombies not so much as the main part of an OMG zombies plot line, but as a novel backdrop for some awesome storytelling. The characters are believable, and the issues they encounter expand beyond OMG zombies, touching upon things like race and identity (Am I really myself if I am a zombie/could you really convince yourself that the zombie you just shot is just a walking body). Really cool stuff.

P.S Me and Sara are watching LOST...so expect more posts about that in the future...sorry

so.....i'm back

So, I have finally defeated my computer's lack of hard drive/my laziness. The blog is back. Me and Seth will talk about things soon.

lots of stuff has happened since last post, and I will try to catch you up on the business. But that probably won't happen, so don't hold your breath.

special thanks to the awesome readers (multiple people!!!...well, two) who asked me about posting!

My 'Puter

My computer is alive. ohhhhh man.

Basically, my hard drive decided it was going to stop working during the height of my paper typing frenzy last week. Once I survived that, I got to argue with Best Buy that all needed was a hard drive, not a checkup or tire change, just a hard drive.

anyway, my computer is alive, and i've learned how screwed I am when it isn't

cool moments happen

Being in band since 6th grade, if safe to say that I have played a couple concerts. But the one tonight struck in me in a really interesting. The atmosphere was really cool; everybody laughing and having a great time. Perfect for jazz. So we get up there and play are first few songs, and the audience likes us alright. But, that changed once we started playing Little Darlin'. By the time the trumpet solo was finished, the conversational buzz in the room had become silent. As a musician, I've never heard anything like that before. People were stopping there conversation to listen to us, something that left me completely awe struck.

it was really cool

So...about that Podcast

Me and Seth, mostly me, are really bad about making things happen. So the people who are waiting (maybe) for a new episode, we have coming soon. I promise!

Dreams

I have weird dreams sometimes, well, most of the time. And by weird, I mean Marching Band trips to outer space and falling sideways through this hallway:

But I also believe that the dreams I have reflect the circumstances and problems in my life. If I have a metaphorical monkey on my back, my dreams will usually express this problem. It brings a certain clarity to life, which I really appreciate. If I have a wacked up dream about something, I like to think it's my brain telling me to get my act together.

So, I usually end up trying to dissect my dreams for clues; hoping for some edge or insight. But sometimes, as Sara told me one day, a tree is just a tree; it isn't always hiding a forest.

I guess this would explain the old timey western saloon that was my church in a dream once

Studying

I am terrible at studying. Bloody awful at it. I have this terrible habit of staring at my notes for about 30 seconds, saying "Oh yeah I got this," and then proceeding hit the refresh button on facebook for about an hour. It's a vicious cycle, as I realize exactly what I've should've done to study about 30 seconds into the test.

Of course this is only for multiple choice, writing is easy as it can be BSed. It's practically my major...wait...shit

The Transformice Problem!

Something horribly addictive has entered my life. It isn't any sort if new drug to "hit the streets" (I'm to socially awkward to buy drugs anyway, like seriously, how does that happen?). Nay, it is a silly little flash game called Transformice. Basically, you (a mouse) traverse a crazy ass level to get the goods (cheese) and back to the mousehole (for victory). While this sounds pretty stupid, the awesomeness comes from the fact that you are doing this with up to 50 people at one time, all trying to navigate the hilariously impossible levels to get some cheese.

This shit is amazing.

What I Think 9/11 Means to Me

I was in 5th grade when 9/11 happened, and I haven't really thought about what it means to me until now. I understand that it was tragedy, but it never occurred to me that I may have been changed in a way I didn't understand until now. I think that day is when I learned what man has the capacity to do. I learned that we have the power to do not only something evil, but to redefine ourselves with that evil in the eyes of a 5th grader.

Black Dynamite Review

So, I'm slightly lacking in the inspiration necessary to do a more fun blog post, so I'm reviewing the movie Black Dynamite. Try not to feel too gyped...

Anyway, Black Dynamite is one of the most surprising movies if have ever encountered simply because I heard nothing about it until I walked into a video rental store and saw an add for it, forgot about it until about a week ago, finally watched, and was blown away by how little attention this totally awesome movie got. Basically, Black Dynamite is a satire of the classic Blacksploitation movies of the 1970s like Shaft and what not. What we have here is a movie that is completely self aware of it's "satirical-ness" and goes for it. There is plenty of low level humor in the movie, but just enough of it is super smart "blink and you'll miss it" moments that make what could've been a really stupid movie into an underground hit.

Oh and the mustache kicks ass

CAN YOU DIG IT

Running Man

Recently, I've become more serious about staying in shape, eating better, and just really striving to be better. So it was only a matter of time before I ended up hitting the treadmill at the rec. After getting over my slight intimidation by the machine ("How the hell do I goooooo?!?!?"), I began to run.

At first, I was gripped by a sense "HOLY FUCK HOW DO I NOT DIE ON THIS THING," but I got the hang of it. Then it hit me. I zone out sometimes, well, a lot. Especially if I find you boring. I have never zoned out like this though. For a whole two minutes, only myself, the tree so close and so far, and the infinite road between us existed. There was no sound, only raw, forward motion.

I'm going to keep running

Obnoxious Philosophy

As a Philosophy major, one encounters many types of philosophy during the course of a semester. Sometimes you find awesome philosophy, and other times you find sucky philosophy. However, there is one particular type of philosophy that I find to be well...stupid. And in classic Mike Jones fashion, I realized just a few days ago that I am taking a class completely devoted to the obnoxious philosophy of Metaphysics.

Basically, this means I'm going to spending this semester doubting if I actually exist and doing really weird thought experiments if I become doubtful of said existence when intoxicated. The few rational philosophers who show in this period (1500s to the 1850s) will be like gasps of air before plunging back down into the stupidy stupid of stupid philosophy.

If the world is real enough for me to dislike metaphysics and bitch about it on my blog, it's good enough for me!

Comic Catch up

I don't know how many of you know this, but I like to read comic books occasionally. I'm know comic wizard, but I know the difference between my spider mans and my batmans. So here is what I've been reading recently:

Scott Pilgrim: The 6 volume that inspired the recent movie is really unlike everything I've read. The blending of video game nerdiness, relationship issues that hit home for me, and an absolutely charming tale create something completely unique and totally awesome.

Green Lantern: Rebirth: This is the first Green Lantern book I've read (I know who Hal Jordan is though, relax) and it is simply epic. With excellent writing and artwork that can only be described as powerful, this miniseries is basically badass. If you have a vaugue idea of what a Green Lantern is, read this NOW.

Well, that's what i'm into right now. What about you?

P.S My favorite graphic novels are Watchmen, Superman: Red Son, and Batman: The Killing Joke

BLOGGING ON DEMAND

WAAAAH SUPER POST

First of all, I am soooo sorry that I have not been posting very frequently, as college is keeping me rather busy.

First day of class made me realize how freakin' short my summer was. It also made me realize that I was also that kid who was excited for the first day of school, so the first part isn't that big of a deal. Me and the roomies are all moved in, and haven't killed each other yet, so things are going well. My roommate (to keep his identity safe, I will refer to him as M. Tran or Matt T) is a butthole who pressures me to finish writing certain things for certain blogs, but I can live with him because he is also made of win. just pure win.

Basically, things are looking good.

More posts and podcasts on the way!!

Back to UD

Wow, being back at UD suddenly sucked up a lot of time, so i'm sorry if anyone was really dying for a post!

It feels so good to be back here. Summer was nice, but it was really just time to get back here. It feels amazing to see all my old friends again along with some wonderful and badass new freshmen.

The Pride of Dayton also got a new director, a certain Professor TK. So far, I think the energy he brings out in the band both on and off the field is amazing and a can't wait to see what he can really do!

God it's good to be home!

The End of Summer

The End of Summer

For most of my life, the phrase sucked. A lot. Most of you who went to high can guess why.

It wasn't until last year that this phrase brought a sense of excitement along with the dread because of the "I'm going to college!" combined with the "Oh fuck i'm going to college"

Now, going into my second year, The End of Summer holds less wonder, but much more excitement. Knowing 100% that what will happen once summer ends is awesome is a pretty sweet feeling that I would trade mysterious "OH SHIT" feelings for any day.

Hawaii Part 2

As a kid, vacation was always a time to go do as much cool stuff possible. I craved any sort of awesome diversion and strived to keep my vacations at a break neck speed. I never understood why my parents would just sit on the beach and do nothing.

However, Maui taught that I need to slooooooooooooooow dooooooooooown. Maui was the first time I ever brought a book to the beach. And it was sooooo good.

Hawaii taught me many things, be it most importantly taught me to relax.

Too bad i'm not on vacation now

Hawaii Part 1

Well, in case my excitement over the podcast didn't tell you, i'm home from Hawaii, and I have some interesting stories to share!

One of the first big things we saw in Hawaii was Pearl Harbor. The memorial over the sunken USS Arizona was truly fascinating. I knew little about the memorial itself before I arrived, so I was shocked to see the Arizona just lying below the water under the memorial. It was so close, but oily water made it seem that the ship was in a completely different world. Oil leaking from the ship carved a rainbow road through harbor, a sight I will not forget anytime soon.

More Hawaii posts to come

Aloha Predators!

I went to go see Predators the other day and really enjoyed. If you're looking for a pile of actiony and tense-y goodness, Predators is your movie. The movie really captures the same spirit of the original film, while doing just enough to make it worth seeing. Brody does a great job being the "leader" of the group and the scenery and score do a great job setting the tension. It won't win any oscars, but it was an entertaining film nonetheless.

BTW, Predators was filmed in Hawaii, which is where I'm going now.

Aloha!

The LeBron Issue and My New Hobby

Yesterday, LeBron announced that he would be leaving Cleveland to play in Miami. Personally, I don't pay attention to anything NBA related, so forgive me if I say something stupid, but I really need to thrown in my two cents about this whole situation. The main thing I don't understand is why people in Cleveland are upset to the point that police are stationed in front of the Lebron banner. People going in crazy directions with there career is part of NBA as I understand, and this is certainly not the first or last time some high profile player will switch teams. All this hubbub (love that word) is just the most recent emergence of our worship of insignificant things in the grand scheme of life. Basketball is a game (it pains me to say that as a flyer fan, but deep down I know its true) and LeBron's desire to win a championship isn't worth all the hate.

In other news, I have acquired this new hobby of finding actor's in LOST in other things they did. This has to be the best video I found:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUcdZ_76zwg&feature=related

Things That Hate Mike Jones: Kroger Edition

So, for this post, I decided to list a couple things that i'm pretty sure hate me and try to understand why they do, with a maybe funny conclusion if i'm lucky!

Kroger's Garbage Disposal: For some reason, the garbage disposal decided to spit icky gross water at me. It missed, but it was a bitch none the less.

The Apple Case: Apples at Kroger are very fickle fruits and like to unstack themselves almost immediately, requiring another 20 minutes of careful restacking.

Lazy People and Customers who think the backroom is a magic portal: Basically, some people I work with like to be stealth lazy. I would almost not mind if they were upfront about it, but alas, they are not. Also, Customers who think that the backroom is this magical place that can conjure anything (including guitar picks, which a customer asked me to look for) love to drive Mike crazy.

I starting to suspect that these things are all connected by weekly planning sessions i'm not invited to...

PS: We are having technical difficulties (we're stupid) with the podcast, so it may not be able to be listened to for awhile...boo

The Roger Ebert Thing

A while ago, renowned film critic Roger Ebert said that videogames could never be art.

Personally, this statement is so short sighted not because Roger is bashing video games, but because he, a critic of one art form, is saying another type of entertainment, of which he has little experience, will never be able to convey ideas and messages like an accepted form of art. If I had to pick one thing that drives me crazy about people, it would be this.

It's the people who always say "the old ways are best" and have no desire to see what new, exciting things the future can hold. Personally, being shortsighted and immovable in our perceptions of the world brings nothing better than the status quo. I'm not saying people should be a leaf caught in the breeze, morally speaking, I'm saying many of us need to be more open of the inevitable future. Thomas Jefferson really nails this idea when he says "In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock."

I hope this is something society can learn to truly embrace and never, ever forget.

All the Problems

So, yesterday I was browsing the internet through a wonderful little tool called Stumble Upon (which kicks ass). Eventually, I came upon a website that listed all the problems of philosophy. My first thought was "wow cool!" then "they are missing a lot of problems, how problematic our lives would be if we didn't have this list" and "who was dumb enough to try and write down all the problems in philosophy?"

Philosophy is something that can't be understood by trying by making lists of stuff that don't make sense. Well actually, that's not a bad idea...moral of the story, everybody who would call themselves a philosopher is probably confused about a ton of stuff and can't explain why

This post kinda sucks

sorry ya'll

Secret Kroger Adventure and Toy Story 3

So the other day at work, I was asked to drive over to another Kroger to pick up some corn. Finding driving much more fun than fruit stacking, I agreed to do so. Little did I know that I was on a super secret mission.

When I arrived at the target area, I began to sweep the area for "the goods." I blended right in with the locals, having much experience with the dialect such as "shallots are this way sir" and "let me check the back room." After a couple of hours, I was able to find my contact on the inside and pick up "the goods" after the secret base was infiltrated I was on my way to the extraction point when my cover was almost blown. One of the guards asked me about the price of particular good. She caught me unaware, but I was able to throw out a "1.99 a pound" before I made it to the extraction point and made my getaway.

when I got back to my Kroger, I was asked if i got the goods.

"mission accomplished"

Toy Story 3 is also really really really good

THOSE FUCKING BUGS

so, you know how when you're outside enjoying the nice summer surroundings. Birds are singing, sky is blue, and flowers are pretty. Pretty awesome right? Well, then it happens.

If you know me well, you know that I got bothered by things that no one cares about and really aren't that big of deal. BUT THIS IS A BIG DEAL. THE CICADA IS BACK.

I was working in the yard today when I heard that insipid racket return for it's annual botherfest. They make everything less fun including puppies, playing catch, and ironically, shooing them away.
I don't remember when I realized I hated the "buggers" so much (HA) but that's not the issue. The issue is that they suck.

More E3 Reactions!

Well, the Big 3 have had their conferences, and I think it is pretty safe to say that Nintendo is the winner!!

Why you might ask? The main reason can be found in Nintendo's brilliant long term strategy. A couple of years ago, Nintendo introduced the Wii and started the motion control shit storm. A couple years later, sales of the Wii are starting to slow and the competition is announcing their own motion control devices. So what does Nintendo do? They realize that the "motion control market" is almost over saturated, so they present a spectacular show of new games and a new portable console with one the best launch lineups EVER, making Microsoft and Sony look ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooold.

well played, Nintendo. Well played indeed

E3 Reactions: Day Uno

For those who don't know, E3 is a big ass videogame shindig that happens in LA every year that nerds like me care about a lot, so here are my thoughts about the big stuff happened today:

The only event I got to watch the Microsoft presentation, so i'll mostly be talking about that. We all had a pretty good sense of what was going to be happening at this conference: Microsoft making a convincing argument for Kinect and showing a shit ton of cool games. Thankfully, they managed to pull that off. Got to see some cool demos of Gears, Halo, and Call of Duty and showed that Kinect has the potential to be a little more than an gimic like PS3 sixaxis. Really love the big ESPN deal and can't wait to see how that turns out!! GO FLYERS! Really surprised Kinetic did not get a price!! It makes sense though, as Sony is showing off their motion control thing tomorrow, putting the pressure on them to make a new pricing announcement. cool business move

oh yeah new xbox model

Krogz

I am happy to say that my first few days at Kroger have gone well. I didn't die, nobody caught on fire, and nobody got poisoned!!

I really wish I had a sign that said "I'm new, don't ask me questions!" that wasn't my dumbass face. sigh.

The major surprise of the these past few days was that it took a good 3 hours to realize my name was MIKE JOOOOOONES. Speaking of my co-workers, they are all sarcastic jerks, self labeled "the rejects of kroger."

I think i'll fit in great

The Real Day 1

Tomorrow is my first real day on the "sales floor" of Kroger. While i'm not too nervous, that will change dramatically if they ever refer to me as "fresh meat". Something about the phrase literally scares the shit out of me. No idea why. Subconscious fear of meat? Thoughts?

For all the videogame enthusiasts out there, me and my buddy Seth are going be starting a videogame blog/podcast!!! We're currently in the pre-production phase (the blog has nothing on it, we suck at recording stuff, and I somehow disrupt the nature of sound when talking into a mic) but i'll let you know when we have something awesome rockin

Fragile

Today I was driving to work to finish up some training stuff when it hit me. I don't know what it was, or what caused me to have this realization, but everything (EVERYTHING) just seemed fragile. I'm not sure in what sense everything was fragile, but the universe around me that was once strong felt weak.

I feel like this is something I'll experience many years from now, the day I realize my youthful body is gone. I just hope the youthful spirit stays.

In other, more hilarious, news, I find it awesome that someone made a fake BP Public Relations Twitter account:

I swear I saw one for the oil spill itself, but I couldn't find the link :(

The Prince of Kroger

This post is a double dose of blogy goodness!!! yay!!! Prince of Persia review and the wackiness of Kroger!

Let's get started with Prince of Persia. PoP is your typical summer swashbuckling movie starring that one guy whose name I can never spell (Jake Gyllenhhhiadjifdsa). Anyway, the movie revolves around Prince Dastan's discovery of a time-bending dagger after his country invades a neighbor that allegedly has weapons (not Iraq). Action wise, there are a lot of really cool set pieces and some scenes that I enjoyed because I'm a sucker for time travel plot lines. Other than those few scenes, there is nothing really standout about this movie. It's like Disney sucked the fun out of the Pirates movies, made a setting swap, and called it Prince of Persia. The characters just aren't interesting enough for me to have really cared about what was going on.

I guess I'll conclude this short review with this: for a video game movie, it's not half bad.

So, Kroger training is in full swing now. By training, I don't mean working with people on the floor to figure out what work will actually be like, I mean taking computer courses to learn how to lift a box in my "green zone," that bananas are the most popular fruit in America, and that you can avoid germs if you never touch anything ever. It's the bureaucratic training stuff that I really dislike about having a job like this. I honestly feel like this is only shown to me so Kroger has a case against me in court should it arise.

I can feel the fun loving part of me becoming a little more like Al Gore every time I complete a course about lifting safety. But hey, at least I get paid.

Alan Wake Review

Another game review:

If I've learned one thing from following loooooooooooooong development cycles of games, it's that they usually end badly. However, Alan Wake proves that a long and winding road does not spell doom for a game.

Alan Wake is psychological thriller/action game in which strange events befall Alan Wake (a writer) during his vacation in a town called Bright Falls. The story of the game has a very Twilight Zone feel, which is made even more interesting by good voice acting and a memorable cast. The game is broken into day and night segments (the day being mostly story driven while the night is action based). The nighttime combat segments do a really great job of creating a constant tension through the superb use of lighting. The darkness creates a constant state of fear and alertness while the light makes you feel safe in a way that few other games accomplish (making lights that flicker out before you reach them the worst shit that can happen ever).

Atmospherically and story wise, the game is great. But Alan Wake is plagued by many nagging problems that keep from being an A+ game. The combat becomes a chore halfway through the game and just obnoxious by the end of game, which doesn't bode well for a combat system that is mediocre at best. The game also took me about 7 hours to beat, which makes for a really short game in which the story mode is all there is.

Alan Wake is not a bad game, but it's flaws in essential parts of the game and it's short length make it impossible for me to justify a full purchase. However, there is a lot of fun to be had in Alan Wake and is definitely worth a rental.

Jim the Sausage Man

A couple of months ago, me an my aunt went to a routine eye exam, and were chilling in the waiting room for a bit. For some reason, we got on the subject of our favorite meat dishes, so naturally sausage arose eventually. My aunt asked me if I like sausage and I said no. I asked her the same question, and she also said no.

"Well why not?" said Jim

We were surprised by this interruption, but decided to let him continue. Turns out Jim was one of the heads of a local fresh market that dealt with a lot of meat, including sausage. Jim described why sausage was something that shouldn't be missed and that there is a lot more to know about sausage then one would realize. Eventually, we had our appointment and thanked Jim for a good conversation.

You might be wondering why I mention this conversation now. Well, Jim recently passed away.

Until then, I had completely forgotten about my conversation with this man and never got around to ordering sausage. Now, anytime I think about anything relating to meat, I think of Jim.

It's just interesting to know that the people you meet in passing can change your life just as much as people you see everyday.

Reviews

So, i'm pretty sure i'm gonna make revives of stuff a fairly regular thing. If anybody wants to recommend anything (books, movies, games, music) for me to give my thoughts on, I would love too. I'll also probably do that for random subjects if someone presents some really interesting ideas!!

My first day on the job is tomorrow!!! It's just training, and for some reason i'm worried i'll suck at a tour of the store (I could find a way, trust me). For things like this, I always get mega worried. Most things don't get me too worried, but some really dumb things just get to me. Not sure why, it just happens. Nothing some liquid courage can't fix (which would be bad on the other extreme). It's too late and I don't know why i'm still writing...

night ya'll

Red Dead Review

For those interested, this is my review of Red Dead Redemption from Rockstar:

Historically, games set in the "wild west" have been mediocre at best. I'm not sure why this is true, but game makers just haven't had luck making a hit based on the wild west.

Rockstar changes this strange truth with one the finest games I have played. A simple way to describe this game is "GTA IV set in the wild west," and this is true: same mission structure, same engine, and very similar combat. Not that this a bad label, as all of the elements lifted from GTA IV are rock solid and make the game a ton of fun. But Red Dead goes beyond this label by creating a western landscape that is gorgeous, with environments that go far beyond the concrete jungle.

Story wise, the game has a slow start and the protagonist's intentions could be made clearer, but this only a minor flaw in a story that is gripping in action and presents some very interesting themes regarding human nature and change under the umbrella of the end of the wild west. The story only gets better because of memorable cast of characters backed with top notch voice acting and a haunting soundtrack.

On the multiplayer side of things, Free Roam opens up the entire game world to you and bunch of your friends. There are so many challenges to pursue within Free Roam, an experience that is only enhanced when riding with a bunch of your other friends. In the actual modes, Red Dead puts the western twist on your familiar game types. While this isn't bad, I feel as if there was potential for some really unique game types.

Overall, it is understandable that someone who played a crapton of GTA would feel underwhelmed by this game, but a lot of that feeling could be a result just of preference with a certain setting. I highly recommend everyone play Red Dead simply because it is such a great game in all aspects and is guaranteed to keep you busy for a loooooong time.

Not the best review, but it's my first ever

Woah

If the finale of Lost taught me anything, it's that a tv show can be so much more than a couple of cool scenes strung together. Lost was a culture for me; it had its own language, traditions, religious practices (obsessing over facts and scouring Lost based blogs), and clothing (jumpsuit). Lost gave me new friendships that will last a lifetime. Lost has taught me some of the most powerful lessons that can be taught; that we can't let others tell us what we can't do and that if we don't live together, we will die alone. I bid farewell to something that really changed the way I look at the world around me.

or maybe i'm overacting

The End of Lost

I just hit me today. There are only two and a half hours of new lost left in my life. I know most people don't think it's a big deal and say I'm overacting (which I probably am), but it's a pretty significant landmark personally because it's one of my favorite things ever.

Hopefully, the finale and the light it sheds on the series as a whole will keep me talking for months, or maybe i'll have to find a new show...sigh

Enjoying the blog ok?

Being the Good Guy

I acquired this new game yesterday titled Red Dead Redemption, which is basically Grand Theft Auto in the Wild West. This game, like many others nowadays, leave morality of the character up to the player. And for some reason, I always take the moral high road in games (maybe because it counts as being nice to other people in the eyes of God???). So, I start up the game and begin my quest to be the hero of the west.

But it's not that easy

One of the very first tasks I did involved me and the local Marshal taking down a gang that had taken hostages in a farm. So, we bust open the barn door, and the sight is awful. I won't describe it, but it was bad. A woman come out of the corner and says that the rest of the men are in the main house. We cleared out the house quickly and rescued all the hostages. I was expecting to hear a lot of "God bless you!" and "Thank you so much," but all I got was the women accusing me, saying it was my fault for letting this happen and that I was just as bad them. The look of anger on that woman's face struck me in a way no other game has before.

Guess being the good guy is a little harder than I thought

Drug Tests and LOST

Review of the Day: DRUGS

Today was the first time I had ever been drug tested (for a job interview that went very well by the way). The interviewer was asking very typical questions about job history and all that business, when she was all of the sudden, she said "DRUG TEST TIME." Almost immediately, I got very paranoid about the fact I used mouthwash approximately half an hour, but soon realized that was dumb. But I continued my paranoia, pondering if someone sprinkled planted opium on my cereal this morning. I get bothered by the strangest things...

LOST Rant:

The more I think about Across the Sea, the more that episode intrigues me. I went from enjoyment, to great disappointment, to enjoyment of a completely different kind. Just take a few seconds to think about what main character Jacob is similar to, and you'll realize that there is much more to this episode than meets the eye (Lost=Transformers?!?). While this certainly wasn't the best episode of Lost, it is certainly one the strangest and most intriguing episodes in the series.

Question of the Day: What is your favorite useless super power?

Mine is definitely the ability to loosen people's shoes to the point that they debate taking the time to retie them. Internal strife is really funny when A. It's over pointless things and B. Not happening to you.

yours?

Meditation

So, I would say that I meditate on a fairly regular basis. After seeing "Men Who Stare at Goats," I just felt like it would be a neat thing to try. I wasn't sure about what I wanted to accomplish, but again, just wanted to see where it goes.

It started off rather unsuccessfully, or in more accurate terms, hardcore failed. Thinking about nothing is a lot harder to do when actually trying to think about nothing. But I kept at it.

Leading me to yesterday, when it finally clicked. Meditation is now more than me sitting with my eyes closed. I felt re-energized and calm at the same time. While I am certainly no master, i'm starting to get the hang of it and recommend it to everybody else!

For anyone who cares, the Reach Beta kicks major booty

Quest for Jorbz: Part 3

So; things are actually happening in my quest for jobs! After having no success with any of the stores I applied at, mom figuratively beat me over the head with this posting for a market research job. Basically, the job entails someone calling people and asking questions to see if they are fit for a certain type of market research. Not my number one choice, but hell, I'll take it. Get Money; Get Paid.

(People who don't watch LOST just skip this paragraph)

I don't know about the rest of you, but "Across the Sea" was one of the most disappointing episodes of the season for me. There have been worse episodes of LOST (Jack and his tatoos?) and this episode wasn't bad by any means, it was just an unnecessary episode that dealt with facts that weren't really a big deal. While it is interesting to see the explanation for The Wheel and the creation of the smoke monster, most of these felt very forced. It almost feels like the sole purpose of this episode was to tie up loose ends of things that didn't matter to satisfy the fact-obsessed. This episode also gave a back to story to MIB and Jacob that was unnecessary because of Ab Aeterno and our ability to draw conclusions from their interactions within that episode. I think the main reason that this episode really disappointed me was because it had SO much potential to be a huge game changer, which sadly, it was not.

Today was rainy day, and I really love rainy days. You can go outside and play in the rain (musical number included because Gene Kelly is the best) and stay inside and not feel guilty about it all. Lazy, but good day :)

I'm excited people kinda read this. A friend of mine gave it a glowing review, saying
"your blog is much more interesting than termite guts"

Not a bad start I say

Bicicleta Revisited

So, I've been riding my bike fairly consistently for several days now, and I like to think I do some thinking about stuff while riding along. This varies from "what is the meaning of life" to "OH MY GOSH THAT IS A CUTE BABY." I would just like to share one though I had while riding.

It was a particularly nice day here in Worthington: not a cloud in the sky and the grass was as green as it could be. As I was enjoying this scene, I began to think about how different the park must have looked a couple thousand years ago; before the very path I was on existed. It made me realize how big of an impact we can have on our environment in a short amount of time. But then I pondered what this place would look like billions of years into the future. It made me realize that as big as we think we are, we are pretty much insignificant in the grand scheme of The Universe.

Makes a college kid feel pretty small, but I continued down the path regardless.

Sunday

Nothing really exciting happening now, but i did find this neato quote:

"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth"

Oscar Wilde says some really fascinating stuff, check him out.

Be super nice to your mom!!!

Would you like a side of Time Travel with your Iron Man?

Well, yesterday I got to see Iron Man 2!!! Here are my thoughts about the movie:

There are two ways to look at this movie: you can see it is as a bloated, overly complex film that is another victim of the sequal curse. Or, you can see it the way I do, and believe that is a great follow up to the first film that also does an excellent job of setting up key elements for films in the not so distant future. While there are some parts of the movie that tended to drag on a bit, it did not detract from the excellent performances by the cast.

This movie gets a Full Price in my book. It's a pretty sweet movie to kick off the season.

In other news, I had a dream in which I traveled back in time to the beginning of the universe. In case you don't know, or couldn't tell, I have very strange dreams occasionally. Anyway, when i got to the beginning of the universe, everything was blue and oozy.

yeah, I have no idea what it means either.

In classic Ohio fashion, the weather has been bat shit crazy, going from mid 80s to lows 50s with high winds in less than day. At least it makes things interesting!

For anyone who watches FlashForward, Olivia annoys me a lot.

Peace!

The Quest for the Jorbz: Part 2 and another story...

Hunting for jobs can be a frustrating, unrewarding process sometimes.

End of Part 2

In much more interesting news, I present my fascinating expose of The Great Toy Story Cocktease

Now that I have your attention (and that of some lawyers, but nobody hates me that much right?) i'll spin my yarns. So, I was reading the paper this morning, and came across an article about free screenings of Toy Story 3, hoping to generate buzz on The Facebooks and The Twitters. However, there was a dastardly catch: the screening only went 65 minutes in and ended with a cliff hanger.

(Following the link makes this post a lot funnier, I promise)

While most people wouldn't be too bothered by this, I became very peeved with Disney because I usually get bothered by dumb things no one else cares about (LOST re-runs). The only thing that came to my mind was this: So, you're at you Victorian era Ball and there are many kind women to waltz with, but there is that one with that frickin' fan. Being all coy and what not? Like this:

(Thanks for the photo Jackie Forman!!!!)

They make all those crazy fan signals, pretending to send messages, but mostly just messing with the minds of fine Vicotrian gentleman. Disney is that girl at the dance. Not sure why, but they're sneaky plot to generate buzz just grinds my gears.

I also have this unshakeable image of a mustache twirling villian at Disney, planning to conquer the internet by being a jerk to everybody.

In his defense, having an evil mustache would be pretty sweet and make a damn good excuse for being evil. I should get to work on that...

Moral of this way too long story: Bizzare anecdotes are great ways to make a post without having anything really important happen.

Business

Random things I forgot to include earlier:

LOST, as predicted, was CRAAAAAAZY.

I might be playing with settings in the next few days, so don't freak if everything is different.

and I'm really excited people actually read this :D

Bicicleta

Several Word Review of the Day: Lazy as Shit

You know those days when you do nothing, but don't really enjoy it like you would after a long day. Well, today was definitely one of those. Played video games, watched a crap ton of South Park and felt guilty about not going outside. So guilty in fact, I motivated myself around 6:00 PM to ride my bike(something I have not done in quite awhile)!!!!

In true Mike Jones fashion, I ALMOST failed at mounting my two wheeled steed, but thwarted the bike's attempt to make me look stupid. So, I left my house and took a nice little putz through the park that turned into a grand tour of the neighborhood. Basically, going on that bike ride made me realize that riding a bike is awesome, and is an awesome way to forget some things that may be bugging you. Personally, it's good way to get me to actually do something. Moral of the story: ride your bike.

Seriously, stop reading this and go ride a bike. You might thank me for it.

Ciao

The Quest for the Jorbz: Part 1

Fake One Word Review of the Day: BOOSH

As a college student home for the summer, I knew it would only be so long (about 30 minutes before I got home, in my case) before mom would pester about jobs. Basically, all of yesterday was spent scouring Snag a Job and telling my computer for the 50th time that I "excited to work in fast paced and rewarding environments"

So after I finished applying everywhere, I relaxed and said "Ahh, my summer can begin". However, mom pulled the ole' "LOL JK. YOU CAN'T HAVE SUMMER YET! Go and follow up with these places Muahahaha". After this major plot twist, I drove around Columbus all day, and came home with two strike outs and two "we'll call you back"

Sigh

On a happier note, LOST is on tonight, Iron Man 2 comes out Friday, and I ironically have free time because i don't have a job.

Peace

PS: Pretty sure we can add "Companies who post jobs online, but tell you they don't have any in person" to list of People, Countries, and Mobs that Hate Mike Jones.

LOL

yeah...about how I said I would post a lot...in December. oops

Anyway, i'm actually starting this blog and will ACTUALLY try my best to make it suck less than other things you read!

Some updates since my last post:

1. Flyers win NIT!!!!!!!!!!

2. LOST Final Season!!!!!!

3. End of School Year!!!!!

yeah, a lot of potential for cool posts!...but I suck at blogging. Guess the 5 people who read this (excluding mom) will get to hear about my "awesome" quest for jobs, which will hopefully lead to entertaining stuff.

Let's hope this round goes a little better!
